May 9, 2008, Newsletter Issue #160: Can I Make Herbal Cosmetics?

Tip of the Week

If you can follow a simple cookery recipe or make a cup of tea you can make your own cosmetics. That said, there are a few rules to follow:

Use glass or ceramic cookware.
All utensils and containers must be scrupulously clean. Remember, you will not be using preservatives, so before use, wash bowls and pans in hot soapy water, then dry in a low oven (think jam jars).
Buy some dark glass bottles and jars with tight fitting lids to store your products. Light can cause some products to deteriorate.
Have labels handy and always add the date the product was made. Cosmetics made without preservatives have a shorter shelf life.
